Secret of the Universe

I often ask my 12 year old son about the secret of the universe, hoping that God gives me a hint through him. He always says that we will never know the secret. Having been trained as a physicist I was encouraged to discover the secrets of the universe. In ancient Greek thought there is this concept of stealing secrets from “gods” (nature). Ancient Greeks believed that nature hides its secrets.

It is clear that there are infinite number of secrets in the universe. Humanity in its cosmic journey back to its source will no doubt discover more and more secrets through science. Yet, there is another way for human beings.

“If you make the effort to know your inner self, if your desire for self-knowledge is strong, all the secrets will be revealed to you.” – Shrii Shrii Anandamurti

The secret of the universe is that the Cosmic Consciousness is at the core of each entity in its entirety.

This concept is impossible to comprehend intellectually. Use your intuition to form a judgment about the verity of this statement. Do I know this by direct experience? No, but my intuition tells me that it is true. Based on their spiritual experiences, all sages in all cultures expressed this fundamental truth in similar terms.

To explain my intuition I sometimes use the metaphor of “reference” from computer programming. A “reference” is a special kind of connection between the units of a computer program such as “objects” or “instances” or “functions”. When you pass the “reference” of an object to another “object” you can accomplish anything that the original “object” is capable of in the universe of the target object. Similarly, you can pass the “reference” of the “whole” program to the sub units and those sub units suddenly become whole-connected and potentially whole-conscious.

Our soul, our unit consciousness is such a “reference” to the Cosmic Consciousness which is at the core of each entity. I use the expression “in its entirety” because the “reference” has no separate existence; it is pointing to the whole in its entirety.Entities owe their existence to this core, to this reference, or as referred to in ancient philosophy to this “name”. The metaphor of “name” used in ancient philosophy is exactly the same as the metaphor of “reference” used in this article.

When we go beyond ego, and reach the innermost core of our being we become whole-connected and whole-conscious.

Some people use the metaphor of hologram to express the concept of “whole being reflected in the unit”. I find the hologram metaphor problematic because in physics the term “holographic” is used for multiple concepts and theories.

Traditionally, the macrocosm/microcosm terminology was used without much emphasis on the fact that whole is reflected in the unit in its entirety.  Leibniz’ concept of “monad”, however, is very similar to the concept of “reference” explained in this article.

Speaking of secrets, don’t forget that this Creation is a cosmic play. The secrets are part of the cosmic play. Each one of us may discover the secrets dear to our heart. Sages tell us that God shows us what we want to see.

” ‘I appear before a person according to his or her desires. His or her whole being will be filled with my being. All the jiivas (souls) of this universe are rushing towards Me knowingly or unknowingly.’ This is the final secret of the universe.” – Shrii Shrii Anandamurti while quoting from Giita.

We need to use the precious time in life to come closer to the goal of human life. The purpose of human life is to discover the true identity of the human soul. When we experience the identity (oneness) of our soul with the Cosmic Consciousness we become enlightened and spiritually liberated. Identification with the Cosmic Consciousness is known as Self-realization. The state of this spiritual union gives our soul infinite happiness. This infinitely blissful state is beyond description. Cosmic Consciousness is Love because infinite bliss is Love. Divine Love is beyond description.

When we identify with our bodies or with our mental structures (ego) we close our hearts to Love and become unhappy. There is a purpose for the body. There is a purpose for the ego. There is also a purpose for the cosmic drama. Our egos developed over many lifetimes, and it may take few lifetimes to open our hearts to Love and return to the source in ultimate union. The spiritual journey is not easy, it is very important that we help each other in this journey.
