On liberation, union and identity

Cosmic LightThe concepts of liberation, union and identity are typically discussed in the context of social philosophy. This short piece is not really social commentary even though I make a point at the end. This is primarily a follow-up on the previous posting: Philology of Yoga and Tantra.

My take from Sarkar’s philology lessons is the following:

  • Tantra is about the liberation of Consciousness.
  • Yoga is about the union of the individual soul with the Cosmic Soul.

There is also the concept of Self-realization. I have not experienced Self-realization. My intuitive understanding of Self-realization is that the individual soul discovers its true identity. The individual soul realizes that it is no different than the Cosmic Soul.

  • Tantra is about the liberation of Consciousness.
  • Yoga is about the union of the individual soul with the Cosmic Soul.
  • Self-realization is about the true identity of the soul.

Assuming that all 3 items mentioned above refer to the same experience then the concepts of “liberation” “union” and “identity” must be complementary concepts. I am using the term “complementary” in the same sense as Bohr’s Complementarity Principle of Quantum Mechanics.

If the ultimate human experience is described by the words “liberation” “union” and “identity” then these words are sacred.

We can extend the sacredness of “liberation” “union” and “identity” to the social context. People have done this intuitively and placed these concepts above all others.

The goals for the social development cannot contradict the spiritual goal of human beings. If  “liberation” “union” and “identity” are the key concepts in human spiritual development then “liberation” “union” and “identity” must be the key concepts in social development as well.
