Maryam Mirzakhani — a 37-year-old mathematics professor at Stanford University — was awarded a Fields Medal. She is the first woman to win a Fields Medal – the most prestigious prize in mathematics. The Fields Medal is awarded every four years to between two and four scholars under the age of 40.

The Quanta magazine has an excellent article about her titled “A Tenacious Explorer of Abstract Surfaces.” Make sure to watch the short video in that article.

I find it interesting that Mirzakhani constantly doodles while she is thinking. She draws on huge pieces of paper on the floor. Her 3-year-old daughter, Anahita thinks that she is a painter.
