2019 update on the location of the magnetic north pole

Magnetic north pole has been drifting from Canada to Siberia. The drift speed is accelerating. This prompted scientists to update the World Magnetic Model recently. GPS system, navigational systems used by satellites, aircraft, ships, submarines and other vehicles rely on the World Magnetic Model. The model is updated every 5 years – the last one was in 2015. The recent update is 1 year ahead of schedule due to the faster than expected drift of the magnetic north pole. The recent update is known as the “World Magnetic Model Out-of-Cycle Release.”
