Super performance of the Large Hadron Collider in 2016

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN concluded its 2016 proton-proton run.  Integrated luminosity delivered by the LHC this year was far above the expectation. The following graphs summarize the performance numbers. For a definition of (inverse femtobarn) see this blogpost.

ILC (International Linear Collider)

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN can be thought of as a giant microscope. In LHC physicists collide proton beams against each other and look for new particles in the collision debris. If the proton beams are energetic enough … Continue reading

Few Comments on the Microscopic Black Holes

In 2008, before the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) was turned on there was a concern that LHC would create microscopic black holes and they would grow in size causing the end of the world. LHC has been operating successfully since … Continue reading

What is Spin?

Spin is one of the fundamental properties of elementary particles. Electron and its antiparticle positron have spin=1/2. Photon which has no antiparticle has spin 1. The elementary particles known as fermions and their antiparticles (constituents of matter) have spin=1/2 and … Continue reading
